GirlCove: What does personal style mean to you?

Personal style is important to me because it gives me an opportunity to present myself to the world the way that I want to be seen. As a minority, I am constantly burdened with the feeling that the way that I look sets the tone for how I will be assessed in terms of ability; my style has definitely given me a chance to take charge of that narrative.

GirlCove: How would you describe your personal style and how has it developed over the years?

My personal style is definitely a mix of classic “feminine” looks mixed with rock and menswear influences. I love shirts with clean lines, hats, pantyhose, dresses, skirts, and pumps; but I’ll still try and incorporate some fishnets, a leather jacket, or maybe swap the heels out for oxfords and men’s dress socks to make an outfit less one-dimensional.

I initially became interested in clothes with an objective to find things that actually fit me, so I naturally gravitated towards vintage looks – I think Britain during the 1960s. Over the years, my musical interests have been the main influence in my style; I’m obsessed with my leather jacket and own a LOT of flared sleeves, plus more sneakers than I know what to do with thanks to a serious appreciation for New York hip-hop. It’s an unconventional mix for sure, but that’s what I love about my style!
